Graduate Certificate and Ph.D. Minor

The European Studies Program offers graduate students the opportunity to earn a Certificate in European Studies. Acquiring the certificate will be of value to those graduate students who might need to demonstrate a more general interest in Europe when applying for a job. For example, applicants for such academic positions as a joint appointment with a European studies center, or a position within a single discipline but teaching courses focused on Europe are often required to demonstrate a knowledge of the continent that extends beyond their own discipline.

The structure of the certificate program is intended to give students the greatest possible flexibility in pursuing their own interests. Students wishing to receive the Graduate Certificate in European Studies should do the following:

1. Seek admission to the Graduate School through regular procedures and enroll in the specific department in which the student intends to pursue a higher degree.

2. Develop a program of European Studies courses in consultation with the European Studies advisor and with approval from the chair of European Studies. Courses should include:
1) at least 15 credits in courses from at least three disciplines, and

2) a combination of courses that either cover Europe as a whole (such as "European History from 1812 to 1914") or which together cover at least two separate European countries (e.g., "British History from 1815 to 1914" or "Italy from Liberalism to Fascism").
3. Provide a transcript showing evidence of working knowledge of a European language other than English. (Transcripts may be from undergraduate or graduate level courses, or from a semester or more spent abroad).

In order to be awarded the certificate, students must fulfill the above requirements of the European Studies Program while simultaneously pursuing a degree in their major department. To assure competence in the major discipline, no student will be awarded the program certificate until completing work for at least the master's degree in the major department.

Graduate students may use the certificate to fulfill requirements toward a distributed minor in their major department's Ph.D. program.
