The Center for European Studies received a mini-grant from the Wisconsin Humanities Council for a public humanities project called "On the Road with Hans Christian Andersen."

Scholars from the UW-Madison's Department of Scandinavian Studies, including Niels Ingerwersen and Scott Mellor, will give a series of presentations about Andersen at public libraries around the state of Wisconsin, starting in April 2005.

The program, which is timed to correspond with the bicentenary of Andersen's birth (1805-1875), will bring the richness of Andersen's literature to the people of Wisconsin and will reexamine his life and work in light of recent scholarship, challenging his reputation as a writer for children.

Thanks to the support of the Wisconsin Humanities Council, this program is free for public libraries in Wisconsin.

Other libraries interested in hosting "On the Road with Hans Christian Andersen" are encouraged to contact CES's Outreach Specialist (608-265-6298).
