politique régionale de l'Union Européenne, tendances
globales et dynamiques locales: le cas de la Provence"

12:00 p.m.
Abstract:
At
a time when German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder proposes,
within the framework of his federalist project, to transfer
regional policy to the national level in the name of "proximity",
several questions arise. What is the real impact of this policy?
What is its European value added? Does it contribute to the
Europe of the regions? How does it fit with territorial national
policies? Dr. Daviet will address these questions through a
case study of the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur region of
France.
This
talk will be in French.
"American
Apprenticeship, European Identity:
One of the Semiconductors' Top Five"
Wednesday,

12:00 p.m.
Abstract:
This talk will illustrate the emergence of a European company
in the global semiconductor industry. ST Microelectronics was
born in 1987 from the merger of the Italian SGS Microelectronica
and the French Thomson-Semiconducteurs. Both firms looked to
the US for technological and managerial resources while expanding
within their national markets and retaining their respective
characteristic identities. Their merger, linked to the European
integration process, has allowed ST Microelectronics to become
one of the world's top ten manufacturers of semiconductors.
This talk
will be in English.
Dr. Daviet
works at the University of Provence in Aix-en-Provence as an industrial
geographer specializing in European Union regional policy and
high-tech industry. Her current research focuses on relations
between France and the United States in the microelectronics sector.
